Wood is a versatile product of nature, used for building, furniture manufacture and as a source of energy. Firewood is both a renewable and sustainable source of ready heat. Dependant on the use of the fire different types of firewood can be suggested. For cooking a longer lasting firewood which provides heat yet does not burn as intensely or rapidly as an open fire as used to heat an area. In both instances it is imperative that the wood is not harmful if ingested and that smoke will not harm if it is easily dispersed.
Easy to light – Firewood should be easy to use, requiring only the minimum of effort to start a fire
Long burning – Wood that flares up and burns out rapidly is not ideal and should not be used for fireplace of cooking. However, it is worth considering a small supply of this type of firewood to use as kindling.
Renewable and Sustainable – Firewood requires the cutting down of trees, these are usually replanted to keep the cycle continuous, thus being renewable and sustainable forms of energy. Slow growing trees and exotic species do not fall into this category.
Safe for consumption – Because firewood is mostly used where people are present it is important that the wood selected does not emit any kind of toxin as it burns. Thus, in cities like Johannesburg a reliable firewood supplier is a good route to follow.
Moisture Content – The moisture content in firewood will determine how easily it lights and impact the speed at which the wood burns. Moisture present will influence the quantity and quality of smoke released when the firewood is burnt.
There are numerous types of firewood available. The uses of firewood in urban and residential areas are mainly for heating and occasionally for open air cooking or barbecuing. The types of firewood which would be best suited to these needs are:
RED SALIGNA - Also known as Blue gum is the most popular choice of firewood in Johannesburg for use in the fireplace. It is a hardwood, which means that the structure of the lugs id dense and will burn slower and longer providing a consistent heat.
SEKELBOS – Easy to light and readily creates charcoal, the embers of which impart a distinct smoked flavour to meat cooked on the barbecue.

The measurement for wood is cord. One would order a cord of wood for delivery. A cord is measured when the firewood is stacked. This would equal to 8feet wide by 4 feet high and 4 feet deep or 2.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m.
The fireplace or stove in use and the length of time that your fire is kept burning will determine the speed at which you use up a cord of wood. The ideal way in which to determine how much firewood you need to order would be to make a fire and keep track of:
Time spent burning
Number of logs used during that time
Provided you have a clean chimney and fireplace free of ash and dust you will effectively be able to determine how much firewood you use in one sitting and in so doing calculate how much you require per week or month.
There are various apps available that will assist in calculation of firewood requirements.

Firewood that is delivered to a home is generally well seasoned. That means that it has been chopped and left so that the moisture content can be reduced to a level that will give you the best burn.
Firewood should be stored so that it retains its optimal moisture content. This means that if stored in an outbuilding or outdoors it should be raised off the ground, away from possible water flow. The woodpile should be covered with a tarpaulin to protect against rain or snow. Johannesburg is not a winter rainfall area and is not prone to snow, but a protective covering is remembered. In addition to raising and covering, care should be taken to ensure ventilation so that any trapped moisture does not create mould and render the firewood unusable.
